
On February 9, 2026, Peter Marketos received the United States Attorney General’s designation as Acting U.S. Marshal for the Eastern District of Virginia.
Mr. Marketos began his career with the U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) as a Federal Career Intern in the Middle District of Florida (M/FL) in Tampa, Florida. In 2002, Assistant Director (AD) Marketos graduated from the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center as a Deputy U.S. Marshal (DUSM) and was assigned to the M/FL Tampa Office.
In 2003, Mr. Marketos was promoted to Criminal Investigator and was assigned to the District of Columbia, District Court (DC/DC). During his tenure in the DC/DC, AD Marketos was selected to serve on the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force, rising to team leader and directing teams of other federal, state, and local law enforcement officers during significant high-risk fugitive apprehension missions.
In September 2007, Mr. Marketos served as a DUSM in the Eastern District of Virginia, (E/VA) Alexandria Office, creating the Capital Area Regional Threat Group as the District’s Threat Investigator. In May 2009, Mr. Marketos was promoted to the Agency’s Judicial Security Division, where he served as Senior Inspector on the United States Deputy Attorney General’s (DAG) Protection Detail, leading law enforcement teams during domestic and international protective missions. In December 2014, Mr. Marketos was promoted to Chief Inspector of the DAG’s Protection Detail, where he managed all aspects of operational planning and staffing.
In September 2015, Mr. Marketos was promoted to the Agency’s Investigative Operations Division, serving as Chief Inspector of the National Sex Offender Targeting Center (NSOTC), where he worked collaboratively with other federal, state, local, military, tribal, and territorial law enforcement agencies to train personnel and utilize data analytic techniques to locate non-compliant sex offenders.
In July 2017, Mr. Marketos promoted to the rank of Assistant Director of INTERPOL’s United States National Central Bureau, leading the Global Policing Services Division, a multi-agency Division assembled to work collaboratively to manage international fugitive investigations, partner with state and local law enforcement agencies domestic and abroad and locate critically missing adults and children across the globe.
In February 2018, Mr. Marketos was selected to lead the USMS Sex Offender Investigations Branch as Chief Inspector where he was responsible for overseeing the management of all USMS sex offender investigation programs, including field operations, the NSOTC, the Behavioral Analysis Unit, the Missing Child Unit, and the International Megan’s Law program.
In September 2019, Mr. Marketos was promoted to Chief Deputy United States Marshal for the E/VA, where he commanded a statewide multi-agency mission child operation that resulted in the recovery of 27 missing children during a five-day operation. In this capacity, AD Marketos worked closely with the United States Department of Justice Criminal Division and foreign governments surrounding sensitive criminal investigations.
In January 2021, Mr. Marketos was selected to serve as Deputy Assistant Director (DAD) for the Agency’s Tactical Operations Division. As DAD, he maintained direct oversight of the Special Operations Group, the Office of Emergency Management, the Office of Resource Management, the Strategic National Stockpile Security Operations, the Office of Crisis Services, the Office of Security Programs, and the Office of Strategic Technology. In September 2021, AD Marketos was selected to serve as Acting Assistant Director of the Tactical Operations Division, supporting USMS Executive Leadership on internal and external initiatives. On March 30, 2023, United States Attorney General Merrick B. Garland designated Peter Marketos as Acting United States Marshal for the District of Columbia.
On March 8, 2023, Peter Marketos was selected to the Senior Executive Service and designated to serve as the Assistant Director (AD) of the United States Marshals Service (USMS) Investigative Operations Division.
Mr. Marketos has been charged with supporting USMS executive leadership on temporary strategic assignments to include the Dignitary Protection Program Office and U.S. Supreme Court security operations.
Mr. Marketos is a graduate of the University of South Florida, and an active member of the Federal Law Enforcement Officer’s Association and International Association of Chiefs of Police.
