District of Puerto Rico Joins DEA Red Ribbon Celebration

San Juan, PR – On October 20, 2020 the United States Marshals Service in the District of Puerto Rico, along with many other federal and local agencies joined the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in the celebration of Red Ribbon Week.

"Red Ribbon Week was started after the death of Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena, who in 1985 was brutally tortured and murdered by drug traffickers he was investigating in Mexico. As a tribute to Special Agent Camarena, high school friend, Henry Lozano and Congressman Duncan Hunter, created "Camarena Clubs" and the wearing of a red ribbon to show their oppositions to drugs."

This year event was celebrated on the grounds of El Morro historical site, where the fort was illuminated in Red.

Wilmer Ocasio Ibarra, U.S. Marshal for the District of Puerto Rico said, "The U.S. Marshals Service in the District of Puerto Rico is committed with our communities and will continue supporting the Drug Enforcement Administration and our fellow law enforcement agencies in fighting crime and violence."
