San Juan, PR – The U.S. Marshals Service announced today the extradition of Francisco Alberto Cedeño Amparo, a convicted murderer who escaped custody in Puerto Rico, from the Dominican Republic to serve his 114-year prison sentence.
Cedeño Amparo was convicted in 2014 before the Court of First Instance in San Juan for the fatal stabbing of a man and the attempted murder of a woman during an incident on November 29, 2008. On the day of his sentencing, he escaped while being transported to court.
After his escape, Cedeño Amparo fled to the Dominican Republic. In 2016, the U.S. Marshals Violent Offenders Task Force in Puerto Rico assumed responsibility for the case. Working in close coordination with the U.S. Marshals Service, Dominican authorities successfully located and apprehended Cedeño Amparo.
Court records reveal that prior to his conviction, Cedeño Amparo had previously absconded from justice after being released on $1.5 million bail.
“The extradition of Cedeño Amparo highlights the strong partnership between the U.S. Marshals Service, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic,” said Wilmer Ocasio-Ibarra, U.S. Marshal for the District of Puerto Rico. “No matter where fugitives attempt to hide, the Marshals Service and our law enforcement partners will pursue them until justice is served.”
Cedeño Amparo will now be transferred back to custody in Puerto Rico, where he will serve his sentence.
The Justice Department's Office of International Affairs provided substantial assistance in securing the arrest and extradition to the United States of Cedeño Amparo. The Puerto Rico Department of Justice prosecuted Cedeño Amparo.
