Memorial Service Held for Deputy U.S. Marshal Michael “Drew” Hanson

WASHINGTON – A memorial service was held to honor the life, service and sacrifice of Deputy U.S. Marshal Michael “Drew” Hanson assigned to the Western District of Louisiana Fugitive Task Force July 18 at The Pentecostals of Alexandria Church, Alexandria, Louisiana. 

Hanson was shot and killed while serving a warrant on a fugitive in Alexandria, La., July 13.

A procession of law enforcement vehicles, including representatives from the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office and Louisiana State Police, wound through Alexandria to begin the service. The memorial service was attended by more than 1,500 people including family, friends, colleagues, and those paying respects for his service.

“Drew took his job very seriously, always growing and always improving upon his deputy skill set. He was a deputy in every fiber of his being,” said Gadyaces S. Serralta, director of the United States Marshals Service. “We are so proud to be associated with such a remarkable young man. We are also humbled by his courage and willingness to make the ultimate sacrifice for the safety of others.” 

“Today’s turnout is a testament to the impact of Drew’s life and ultimate sacrifice has had on our agency, our community and our country,” said Glenn Belgard, retired deputy U.S. marshal. “Let it not be in vain, let us not forget. The law enforcement community is truly a family.” 

Following the service, the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office SWAT team conducted a 21-gun salute. “Taps” was played by the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office bugler. The memorial service concluded with the end of watch call and presentation of an American flag to his wife as the USMS Pipes and Drums played.

Hanson joined the U.S. Marshal Service in 2020 with assignments in the Southern District of Alabama and the Western District of Louisiana. Prior to the USMS, he served as a U.S. Customs and Immigration Officer with the Department of Homeland Security until 2016 and served with the Ocean Springs, Mississippi, Police Department until 2015. He is survived by his wife and two children.
