Southern District of Iowa

Davenport, IA - U.S. Marshals in Georgia on Monday arrested a 17-year-old juvenile wanted in connection to an April shooting in Iowa City that left five injured.

On April 19 at approximately 1:45 a.m. the juvenile allegedly engaged in a fight in the 100 block of East College Street in the Downtown Pedestrian Mall in Iowa City. During a break in the fight, the juvenile obtained a firearm from another individual, then allegedly drew the weapon and shot six times into the crowded pedestrian mall, striking five innocent bystanders.

During their investigation, deputy U.S. marshals in Iowa narrowed their search for the juvenile to Forest Park, Georgia, and sent a collateral lead to the U.S. Marshals Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force (SERFTF) in Atlanta, requesting assistance with the shooter’s apprehension.

SERFTF members located the juvenile shortly after 9 a.m. at the Southern Suites Hotel in Forest Park and took him into custody.

“The Marshals Service takes great pride in the strong collaboration we’ve built with our federal, local, and state agencies,” said George Mavromatis, Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal of the Southern District of Iowa. “Our teamwork has formed a dedicated presence committed to ensuring that fugitives face justice, regardless of where the crime originated.  In this instance, we successfully tracked down and apprehended an individual who crossed multiple jurisdictions, showcasing the effectiveness of our coordinated team efforts.”

The Southern District of Iowa Fugitive Task Force was assisted during this investigation by the USMS of the Northern Iowa Fugitive Task Force and Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force.
