U.S. Marshals Arrest Suspected Juvenile Times Square Shooter

New York, NY – At approximately 3:30 pm today, the United States Marshals Service (USMS) and the New York Police Department (NYPD), with the New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force, arrested the juvenile suspect wanted for the February 8th daytime shooting of a 37-year-old female tourist inside a Times Square sporting goods store. 

The suspect twice engaged the NYPD officers pursuing him by firing his pistol at them while fleeing on foot into the NY subway system.  NYPD officers were unable to return fire due to the density of tourists taking cover on the scene. 

After the crime was reported the case was adopted by the USMS NY/NJ Regional Fugitive Task Force, working closely with the NYPD. They quickly identified the suspect, tracking him to Yonkers, NY where he was apprehended without incident and turned over the NYPD detective squad for further questioning and processing.  

The defendant remains in state custody pending adjudication of his alleged crimes.

Ralph Sozio, the U.S. Marshal for the Southern District of New York, hailed the quick arrest, and said, “Anyone that commits these acts of violence in our city against anyone, especially law enforcement officers, be assured we will use every resource available to find you and bring you to justice.”

The New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force (NY/NJ RFTF) began operations in April 2002 and was the first regional fugitive task force to become fully operational following the Presidential Threat Protection Act of 2000. The NY/NJ RFTF was the flagship that has allowed seven other regional fugitive task forces to be created across the country. With partnership agreements with over 90 federal, state, or local agencies and 13 fully operational offices, the NY/NJ RFTF has successfully apprehended over 95,000 fugitives since inception.
