U.S. Marshals Arrest Two Cleveland Homicide Suspects in One Day in Two Different States

Cleveland, OH – Yesterday, members of the U.S. Marshals Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force (NOVFTF) arrested two individuals wanted by the Cleveland Division of Police for two separate homicides. The task force arrested a juvenile female in the morning in Cleveland and then Mar’Shawn Johnson, 21, yesterday evening in Huntsville, Alabama.

According to the Cleveland Division of Police, on March 1, 2024, two juveniles were backseat passengers of a moving vehicle when the juveniles shot and killed a 39-year-old male in the back of the head while he was driving the vehicle. The vehicle crashed near W. 23rd Street and Broadview Rd and the two juveniles fled the scene. A 14-year-old male surrendered to Cleveland Police last week in connection with this incident. Yesterday morning, members of the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force arrested a 17-year-old female at an address in the 3200 block of W. 44th Street.

On January 13, 2nd district Cleveland Police officers responded to the 1700 block of W. 25th Street in Cleveland, Ohio for a male with multiple gunshot wounds. Mar’Shawn Johnson was allegedly involved in a physical altercation with Roderick Phillips, 49, and during the altercation Johnson pulled out a firearm and shot Phillips and then proceeded to flee the scene. The victim was taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. The Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force developed information that Johnson fled Ohio and was residing in Alabama. Last night, members of the US Marshals Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested Johnson at a residence near the 3000 block of Panorama East, Huntsville, Alabama because of the information developed by the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force.

U.S. Marshal Pete Elliott stated, “Our task force was able to successfully arrest two violent fugitives, in two separate states, because of the strong relationships we have with our task force partners.”
