U.S. Marshals Capture NH Attempted Murder Suspect in Lawrence

Concord, NH – The U.S. Marshals Service – NH Joint Fugitive Task Force and Massachusetts Fugitive Task Force safely ended the year-long hunt for a Merrimack County man charged with attempted murder and hiding in Lawrence, MA last night. With the assistance of Lawrence Police Department, a Mann Street residence was surrounded, and David A. Makin, 51, of Manchester, who has dodged authorities since being indicted in January 2023, was quickly apprehended by the Marshals Service entry team.  

According to Canterbury Police records, Makin was involved in an altercation on August 19, 2022, at a Canterbury campground and was initially arrested for domestic violence. However, a January 19, 2023, indictment outlines how Makin allegedly attacked and harmed multiple people in the dispute, brutally assaulting one in the head with a guitar and rock. As a result, Makin was charged with attempted murder, as well as six other charges ranging from reckless conduct to first degree assault. Makin’s ability to avoid these charges ended yesterday thanks to the efforts of the U.S. Marshals Service and Lawrence PD.

Makin has been charged as a “Fugitive from Justice” in Lawrence District Court, where an earlier hearing resulted in his detention without bond. Makin will be detained at the Middleton House of Corrections while awaiting extradition by the Merrimack County Sheriff’s Office.

Merrimack County Sheriff David Croft stated, “I am very proud of the hardworking men and women on my staff, and the U.S. Marshals Service for their dedication to locating and removing dangerous criminals from our cities and towns daily.” Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal Katherine Burns added, “The closure of this case is exemplary of the persistence with which our task force officers, supported by our partner agencies, can pursue all the breadcrumbs that lead to finding a desperate felon on the run.”
