U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force Apprehends Austin Homicide Suspect Wanted in May Shootout

Austin, TX – Members of the U.S. Marshals-led Lone Star Fugitive Task Force, Monday evening arrested an individual who was wanted in connection of a May 6 homicide in Austin.  

Kovantae Markail Williams, 32, of Austin, was arrested on a murder charge from a mass shooting incident that occurred May 6 at 15424 F.M. 1825 Road at the Down South Cajjun Eats restaurant in Austin. According to an affidavit filed by the Austin Police Department, Austin 9-1-1 received multiple calls indicating someone was shot at the location and CPR was administered. Upon arrival, responding officers located several gunshot victims, where one was transported to a nearby hospital, and was subsequently pronounced deceased.

The investigation documented three shootings that started at approximately 1:29 a.m. and concluded at 1:30 a.m. in the front parking lot of the Down South Cajjun Eats. 

The Austin Police Department investigated the incident and obtained an arrest warrant for Williams in a City of Austin Municipal Court on Sept. 3. 

The Austin Police Department requested immediate assistance from the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force to locate and apprehend Williams. The Austin-based task force initiated a  fugitive investigation and observed Williams at an apartment complex in the 1500 block of Howard Lane, where he was arrested without incident.

During the arrest operation, Deandre Markeith Stiles, 29, was arrested on scene for an outstanding warrant with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office for Felon in Possession of a Firearm.   

The Lone Star Fugitive Task Force received additional assistance from the Austin Police Air Support Unit that contributed to a successful operation.  

Williams and Stiles were transported and booked into the Travis County Jail, where they will await further judicial proceedings.
