The Honorable Terry J. Burgin was nominated by President Joseph R. Biden, Jr., confirmed by the United States Senate, and appointed on December 9, 2022, to serve as the United States Marshal (USM) for the Western District of North Carolina.
United States Marshal Burgin has served more than 45 years with the City of Lincolnton, North Carolina, Police Department. He held numerous leadership positions in the Department, including Chief Criminal Investigator, Chief of Police, Consultant to the City Manager’s Office, and more recently, Sergeant of the Police Reserves.
From early 2005 until late 2016, United States Marshal Burgin worked as a Court Security Officer (CSO) under contract with the United States Marshals Service (USMS). In 2014, he received recognition as the United States Marshal’ 4th Circuit Court Security Officer (CSO) of the Year, and from 2016 to 2017, USM Burgin served as District’s Court Security Officer (CSO) Supervisor.
United States Marshal Burgin received his Associate of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Gaston College, in Dallas, North Carolina. He is also a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy in Quantico, Virginia, and the Administrative Officers Management Program at North Carolina State University, Raleigh.
